Antoni Tàpies (1923-2012) was a Spanish painter, sculptor, and art theorist who was associated with the "Art Informel" movement.  He was born in Barcelona, Spain, and began his artistic career as a self-taught artist, developing a unique style that incorporated a variety of materials including sand, marble dust and newspaper clippings into his work.  Young Tàpies was deeply affected by the Spanish Civil War and the post-war period, with his work often reflecting the political and social concerns of the time.  His paintings often incorporate abstract shapes and symbols, such as crosses and arrows, and explore themes of spirituality, death, and decay.  He was interested in Eastern philosophy and mysticism, which informed many of his abstract compositions.  Throughout his career, Tàpies received numerous awards and honors, including the National Visual Arts Prize of Catalonia and the Gold Medal for Fine Arts from the Spanish government. He was also a member of the prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris.  In addition to his artistic practice, Tàpies was also a writer and published books on art and philosophy.
