  • Three original lithograph by Roger Mühl, "Pont d'Iéna" (Jena Bridge), "Champs au Printemps" (Field in the Spring) and "Soliel d'Hiver" (Winter Sun), from the limited edition (950) monograph printed and published by Mourlot in 1963.  For over 150 years, Mourlot was almost synonymous with lithography, producing work of such excellent quality that it was clear they had attained the height of printing mastery.  The print is in mint condition, printed on heavy, watermarked Arches paper; print size: 12 3/4 x 9 3/4 inches.  A fine art reproduction of the Colophon is provided.

Each print is presented in a handmade 3/4" inch wide walnut colored bamboo wood frame, ivory conservation mat, and protected by Tru Vue Optium Museum Acrylic® glazing.  Mat opening size: 13 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches; overall size with frame: 17 3/4  x 14 3/4 inches.  As with all of our framed art, the frames and framing materials are new, and once framed is stored in a controlled environment away from light.  The prints are in mint condition, having never been previously displayed.

Pont d'Iéna is a bridge spanning the River Seine in Paris. It links the Eiffel Tower on the Left Bank to the district of Trocadéro on the Right Bank.  In 1807, Napoleon I ordered the construction of a bridge overlooking the Military School, and named the it after his victory in 1806 at the Battle of Jena.  It was completed in 1814.  The steps leading off the bridge are popularly known among film fans as the "Renault stairs", as they featured in a scene in the movie "A View to a Kill", where James Bond (played by Roger Moore) drove a Renault 11 taxi down the steps in pursuit of the assassin May Day (Grace Jones).

"Champs au Printemps" (Field in the Spring) and "Soliel d'Hiver" (Winter Sun) depict seasonal scenes   in Provence, France.  While the subject matter varies from urban to rural, Mühl palette and technique are similar in all three prints, making for a wonder town and country abstract grouping.

Roger Mühl (1929-2008) was a French painter and printmaker known for his landscapes and still lifes.  He was born in Strasbourg, France, and studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.  Muhl's work is characterized by a sense of harmony and balance, and he often used muted complimentary colors and neutral tones, with soft brushstrokes, to create both atmosphere and physicality in his subtle compositions.  His landscapes frequently feature the rolling hills and fields of the French countryside in Provence, while his still-lifes often depict simple objects such as fruit or flowers arranged in a way that suggests a serene and peaceful atmosphere.  Throughout his career, Muhl received numerous awards and accolades for his work, including the Prix de la Critique in 1973 and the Prix du Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1992.  His works are held in many public and private collections around the world.  Our collection of his prints are classic examples of his work.
