Very interesting 1650 map of the world "Orbis Terrarus Veteribus Cogniti Typus Geographicus", as it was known to the ancients, by Jan Jansson. Such maps, which titled contemporary geography with ancient place names, were popular 16th and 17th Centuries. It covers Europe, Western Asia, and Northern Africa, and portions of the surrounding seas. Many ancient world place names are indicated. Jansson also notes all five climatic zones. Various fishing, sailing, and merchant ships, as well as the odd sea monster, fill the seas. A baroque title area complete with cherubs occupies the upper part of the plate. This map represents the first state of this map, with the dedication area at bottom center being empty. The map is faithful to the standard model of world at that time.
