Original hand-colored 1757 Jacques-Nicolas Bellin map, full title in French: "Carte de la Nouvelle Angleterre Nouvelle Yorck et Pensilvanie". Published during the French and Indian War in Abbé Prévost's "L'Histoire Generale des Voyages". The map depicts the region from Lake Erie and Lake Ontario to the Atlantic Ocean and from Canada to the northern portion of Maryland. Numerous cities and towns are identified, including Albany, New York, Boston, Cambridge, Philadelphia, New Haven, Salem and York. Native American tribes and settlements are also identified, including the Five Iroquois Nations, while others are referred to simply as "villages sauvages". Important rivers, lakes, and mountain ranges are also illustrated. Noteworthy are the forts that would play an important role during the French and Indian War, including Forts Niagara and Owego on Lake Erie, but with Fort Carillon (Fort Ticonderoga) mis-located on the west side of Lake Champlain, and with the La Chute passage from Lake Champlain to Lake George depicted as much wider than in actuality. A rococo-style cartouche decorates the map. Centerfold as issued. Excellent condition. Map size: 8 x 11 3/4 inches. A popular map now rare to the market in this condition.
Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703 - 1772), was one of the most important cartographers of the 18th century, with a career spanning some 50 years. Compared to earlier 17th and 18th century cartographic work, Bellin's maps focus on function and accuracy tending. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Bellin was always careful to cite his references. Despite his success, he did not always enjoy his work, which is described as "long, unpleasant, and hard". In addition to numerous maps and charts published during his lifetime, many of Bellin's maps published posthumously with updates.
