Rare and elegant hand-colored copper plate engraved 1764 map of the Americas by French cartographer Louis Brion de la Tour. Full title in French: "L'Amérique Dressée pour l'étude de la Géographie". Depicts the whole of North and South America with several interesting cartographic features. The American northwest vaguely defined. The region of the Apache American Indian tribe is noted just north of 'Albion,' as are the lands of the Eskimos. In South America, many more colonial cities such are noted than in North America. Routes taken by important explorers are indicated. Decorated with an elaborate border and 16 sailing ships. Center fold as issued. Some toning along the center fold; otherwise, excellent condition.
Louis Brion de la Tour (1743 - 1803) was the Cartographer Royal to the King of France, his official title being Ingenieur-Geographe du Roi. Despite a prolific career and several important atlases to his name, little is actually known of his life and career. Much of his work was published in partnership Louis Charles Desnos.
