Beautiful hand-colored 1780 map of northern colonial "New Mexico" and "New France", full title in French: "Le Nouveau Mexique, avec la Partie Septentrionale de l'Ancien, ou de la Nouvelle Espagne" (New Mexico, with the Old Northern Part of New Spain). Covers from the Pacific Ocean through northern Mexico, Texas and Louisiana to western Florida, including the modern day regions of Baja California, northern Mexico and the states of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Louisiana.  The map is highly detailed especially in regard to place names, native villages, missions, and waterways.  In the Texas region there appears a city of 'Texas,' presumably the old Mission de Los Tejas from which name 'Texas' is derived.   Just to the east of this city there is a notation regarding the 1665 death of the explorer La Salle.  The map was issued in the 1780 edition of Bonne's notable "Atlas de Toutes les Parties Connues du Globe Terrestre".
 
Framed to museum-grade standards in a handmade 3/4 inch wide,  antiqued gold beaded wood frame, conservation mat, and protected by Tru Vue Optium Museum Acrylic® glazing.  Mat opening size 8 3/4 x 12 3/4 inches; overall size with frame: 14 1/2 x 18 1/2 inches.  As with all of our framed art, the frames and framing materials are new, and once framed is stored in a controlled environment away from light.  Center fold as issued;  slight peripheral foxing and faint title offsetting; otherwise, the map is in excellent condition.
 
Rigobert Bonne (1727-1795) was a French cartographer and hydrographer.  He worked for the French Navy and produced many maps and charts during his career.  Bonne was known for his clear and accurate maps of regions including France, the Mediterranean, and the Caribbean. His maps were highly regarded for their detail and accuracy, and he was respected for his skills as a cartographer.  Bonne's work was influential in the development of modern cartography, and his maps are still studied and used today by historians, geographers, and other scholars.  After Bonne died, his son Charles-Marie continued to publish his work.
