Original 1799 copper plate engraved, hand colored map "Carte de la Virginie et du Mariland" (Map of Virginia and Maryland) by Bertholon ,from the "Nouvelle Edition" (First Edition) of the "Atlas Modern Portatif" (Portable Modern Atlas).  Also depicting Delaware, "Carolina", and parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania, along with an undefined area west of Pennsylvania.  This unusual map exhibits some very odd features, for example Maryland is depicted as a triangle between Virginia and Pennsylvania without its panhandle.  New Jersey's coastline is very simplified and its border with Pennsylvania is incorrectly shown as being west of the Delaware River.  Delaware is named Delaware Cte (County).  Alexandria, VA is also called Belhaven.  Some rivers are not drawn to their full extent.  Consistent with the period, printed on laid paper.  Map size: 9 x 7 1/2 inches.  Very good condition; slight edge foxing does not extend into the map.
