  • Published by Yale University Press, New Haven, 1963; printed by Ives-Sillman.  Edition of 2000 copies.  Contained in a cloth slipcase with a hardcover text book, softcover commentary book, and eighty folders of prints, each 13 x 10 inches that opens to 13 x 20 inches.  Most folders are double-sided (two prints per folder), but a few prints cover the full sheet.  The folders are  a combination of serigraphs, four-color separation prints and offset lithographs, with the vast majority being serigraphs.  Most 1963 editions of "Interaction of Color" have been broken up.  Many of the remaining complete ones have prints with handing wear and toning.  This copy is in excellent condition, with no toning that affects many, many set.   A rare find in such condition.  Overall size of the case: 14 x 11 x 5 inches.

     

    Josef Albers’s classic Interaction of Color is a masterwork in art education.  Conceived as a handbook and teaching aid for artists, instructors, and students, this influential work presents Albers’s singular explanation of complex color theory principles.  Discussions regarding this ambitious portfolio began in 1956 with Yale University Press. Two years later Norman Ives and Sewell Sillman were engaged to design and produce this complex portfolio, a massive volume illustrating the famous color course that Albers developed during his years in Germany, at Black Mountain College, and at Yale University.  This project took five years to complete  The original edition is recognized as an iconic work, both for its content as well as its thoughtful and elegant design.
