We were fortunate to acquire a number of new old stock lithograph art posters. These posters are not reproductions or offset lithographs. They are original first edition, true lithograph posters, and very collectible works of art. This poster was one of these aquisitions, printed in 1970 for an exhibition of Riopelle at Fondation Maeght in late 1970 and early 1971. Poster size: 28 x 17 inches. Mint condition new old stock.
Jean-Paul Riopelle (1923-2002) was a Canadian painter and sculptor known for his abstract expressionist works. Riopelle was born in Montreal, Canada. He began studying painting at an early age and later attended the École des Beaux-arts de Montréal. In 1947, he moved to Paris, France, where he became associated with the avant-garde art scene and developed his distinctive style. He experimented with techniques such as impasto, using thick layers of paint, and employed a palette knife to create dynamic and textured surfaces in his paintings. Riopelle's artworks are characterized by their energetic brushwork, vibrant colors, and complex compositions. He often drew inspiration from natural landscapes and incorporated elements of nature into his abstract works. Some of his notable paintings include "Pavane" (1954), "Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg" (1960), and "Triptych" (1976). Jean-Paul Riopelle was associated with notable dealers including the Pierre Matisse Gallery in New York, Marlborough Fine Art in London, and Galerie Maeght in Paris. He participated in prestigious art events such as the Venice Biennale, Documenta in Kassel, Germany, and the São Paulo Art Biennial. His exhibitions received critical acclaim, and his work has been displayed in major museums and galleries globally. A set of postage stamps depicting portions of Riopelle's painting L'Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg was issued by Canada Post in 2003, the year following his death.
