Black and white aquatint etching titled "Le Poisson Volant" (Flying Fish) from "Reincarnations du Pere Ubu".  Drawn in 1928, this print is from the first edition, published in 1932 on off-white Japon nacré paper.  This print is often misidentified as "Flying Dragon".  Initialed and dated in-the-plate; signed in pen lower right margin.   Issued in 225 pencil-signed impressions (175 on Van Gelder paper and 50 on Japon nacré paper).  Since our print is not numbered and pen signed, it is probably a rare H. C. (Hors Commerce) print.  The Scotland National Gallery of Modern Art has this same print, similarly pen signed but not dated, on display in its print galleries.  Mat opening size: 8 3/4 x 12 3/4 inches; overall size with frame: 18 x 21 inches.

Framed to museum-grade standards in a handmade 1 1/4" inch mat black wood frame, conservation mat, and protected by Tru Vue Optium Museum Acrylic® glazing.  Mat opening size: 8 3/4 x 12 inches; overall size with frame: 18 x 21 inches.  As with all of our framed art, the frames and framing materials are new, and once framed is stored in a controlled environment away from light.  The print is in mint condition, having never been previously displayed.

Georges Rouault (1871-1958), was a French painter and printmaker known for his expressionistic style and his deep exploration of human emotions and spirituality in his artwork.  Rouault began his artistic career as an apprentice to a stained-glass maker, which influenced his later use of dark, bold outlines in his paintings. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was associated with the Symbolist movement. He also continued to work as a designer of stained glass windows.  One of Rouault's most significant bodies of work is his series of paintings called "The Clown," which he worked on for many years.  These paintings depict clowns as tragic figures, reflecting Rouault's belief in the suffering and isolation of the human condition.  Rouault's work is characterized by its use of thick, black outlines, vivid colors, and a sense of raw emotion.  His subjects often include clowns, prostitutes, and religious figures, with a focus on the marginalized and downtrodden members of society.  Throughout his career, Rouault's work evolved from a more classical style to a more expressive and symbolic approach.  He was influenced by artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin.  Georges Rouault's art had a significant impact on 20th-century painting and continues to be recognized for its powerful and emotional content.  His substantial body of work remains influential to this day.
