Henri Rousseau (1844–1910)was a French Post-Impressionist painter most well-known for his nature-inspired exotic jungle scenes. He was self-taught with no formal training, and was considered to be a "naïve" painter. Also known as primitivism, naïve art is defined that created by a person who lacks formal education in art. Naïve artist paintings typically feature simplicity, incorrect proportions, one-sided perspective, and flat, unnatural colors. Rousseau was a key figure in the movement, and popular among his fellow artists, but was often ridiculed by critics who claimed he painted like a child. Due to his life-long poverty, he never once left France, but was inspired by illustrations in books, postcards, and the botanical gardens of Paris. He died from an infected leg wound in 1910. Today, his work is highly celebrated and has influenced many modern artists. "La Rue" was completed near the end of Rousseau's life. While not an archetypal Rousseau subject, "La Rue" demonstrates all the characteristics of a Rousseau painting: flat colors, unnatural perspectives, and incorrect proportions.
