Bram van Velde (1895 – 1981) was a largely self-taught Dutch painter, printmaker and illustrator who, with difficulties, achieved critical notoriety in the decades after World War II as an Abstract Expressionist artist. Bram Van Velde’s entire life revolved around his painting. He was completely independent, never possessed anything, and never had much financial success. For him, “painting is living", not a living. Georges Duthuit (1891–1973), to whom this work was dedicated, was a French writer, art critic and historian, and was a key commentator on Matisse, Nicolas de Staël, Jean-Paul Riopelle, and Bram van Velde.
