  • 1963 US One Dollar Bill signed with a marker by Andy Warhol, and bearing a USPS date stamp May 21, 1979, New York.  The bill's verso has a "Soup Can" remarque, drawn with the same marker.  While currency signed by Warhol occasionally comes to market, often with attached postage stamps as with our Two Dollar bill, or rubber stamped "Andy Warhol", those having hand-drawn artwork are extremely rare. We were fortunate to acquire two such bills from the estate of a prominent Warhol collector.

Framed to museum-grade standards in handmade 1 1/4" wide cream-washed antiqued gold wood frame, green suede conservation matboard, and protected by Tru Vue Optium Museum Acrylic® glazing.  Mat opening size: 6 1/2 x 2 3/4 inches; overall size with frame: 16 3/4 x 13.  The verso has an opening to show the drawing.  As with all of our framed art, the frame and framing materials are new.  The bill is in excellent condition, save for some bleeding of the USPS date stamp.  It was never previously displayed, and once framed is stored in a controlled environment away from light.

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was an American artist, filmmaker, and pioneer of the pop art movement. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and studied art and design at Carnegie Mellon University before moving to New York City in 1949.  In the 1950s, he worked as a commercial illustrator and designer for various magazines and advertising agencies.  In the 1960s, Warhol became famous for his artwork that featured everyday objects and consumer products, such as Campbell's Soup cans and Coca-Cola bottles.  He also created portraits of famous people, including Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and Elizabeth Taylor, using a silkscreen printing technique.  Warhol's work often explored themes of celebrity culture, mass production, and consumerism, and he was known for his unique approach to art-making that combined high and low culture.  He also founded The Factory, a studio and gathering place for artists, musicians, and other creative people in New York City.  Warhol's legacy as an artist continues to influence contemporary art, fashion, and popular culture. He remains one of the most significant figures of the 20th century art world.

1979 was a notable year even for the prolific Warhol.  He had a cameo role in the movie "Cocaine Cowboys" that was filmed at his summer home on Long Island, produced the famous "Grapes" series of prints, and the BMW M1 "art car".  In October and early November of 1979, some of his photographs were shown in the "People Watching" exhibition at MoMA.  1979 closed out with the exhibition “Andy Warhol, Portraits of the 70's” at the Whitney Museum that ran from November 20 until January 27, 1980.

On May 21, 1979, Dan White was convicted of the voluntary manslaughter of San Francisco mayor George Moscone and openly gay councilor Harvey Milk.  The conviction on a lesser charge outraged the gay community and led to the "White Night" riots.
